System of Care Planning Stages - Fall 2009 Training
The Governor's Office for Children and Families presents the second in a three-part workshop series on systems of care. The first part of the series, offered statewide in February 2009, provided participants with a broad overview of the system of care approach. This second workshop series will provide specific and detailed elements for developing and planning a community system of care. The third and final training series, tentatively scheduled for January 2010, will be a comprehensive system of care implementation guide.
What is system of care?
The Governor's Office for Children and Families Caring Communities system of care approach incorporates a broad array of services and supports that are organized into a coordinated network. These networks focus on the whole needs of the child and family, coordinating prevention, intervention and treatment services.
Why is it important?
By thinking "child first", services and programs are developed and utilized in a more meaningful and effective manner. The old model of seeing what resources are available and then picking one that might - or might not - be a good fit for the youth and family clearly is not the best solution. The system of care approach allows for integrated, seamless service delivery for children and their families in their community, while promoting collaboration, shared decision making and accountability among partners. Additionally, communities interested in applying for grant funding from GOCF in early 2010 will benefit from participation in these trainings.

What will I learn?
- How to begin building a system of care approach that integrates care planning and management through meaningful partnerships with community organizations, state and local agencies, children, youth and families.
- A better way to work together by building common goals, finding concrete ways to promote collaboration, implementing best practices, improving access to services and reducing system fragmentation.
- Concrete steps to begin a system of care that is more about a different way of doing business rather than a costly "new program".
